VALCARCEL: It's Origins
The Spanish surname VALCARCEL is ultimately of Galician
origin, being of local derivation, that is, taken from the name of the place where its original bearer dwelt or where he once
held land. Valcarcel being situated in the province of Oviedo. It has however become associated with Navarre, where it
became connected with the noble houses of Oca and Zuniga. In 1692, Pedro Valcarcel de Oca y Zuniga was admitted to the
nobility and a seat in Corles by the Real Audiencia de Pamplona. Don Antonio Valcarcel, born in Madrid in 1663, was a
member of the Oidor de La Chancillera de Granada, and his son, Don Domingo Valcarcel, born in 1700, was "el Consejera de S.M.
Licenciado", and "Alcalde De Corle y Oidor Decano de la Audiencia de Mexico" Following this date, the conquest of Mexico
saw members of the family establish there too. Antonio Valcarcel y Altamirano, born in Mexico in 1734 was the son of Don Antonio
Valcarcel Consejero de Castilla and a member of the distinguished order of Calatrava, Spain's oldest military order, originally
founded by the Castillians for protections against the moors. Today the surname is found throughout Spain, and also those
areas which have undergone a strong Spanish influence. In more recent times two of it most notable bearers have been Carlos
Valcarcel (1819-1903), the famous Spanish Admiral, and Manual Valcarcel ( 1843-1915), a writer and founder of the romantic
theatre in Spain, and a member of the family of the Marquis of Salinas and Pejas.
