Welcome to The Valcarcel South
Africa / UK Site
The Valcarcel Family's South
African origins begin in the Philippines.
My father Reginald Placido Valcarcel was born in Cape Town in 1923.
His father Juan Valcarcel was born in Capiz, Panay Island, Philippines in the late 1890's. Juan was a merchant seaman
who as a result of an injury sustained at sea was landed at Cape Town in 1920 and hospitalised to recover. Juan liked the
place and the people (The Filipino community in Cape Town) and decided to stay in Cape Town. He met my Grandmother Louisa
Quimpo and they married in 1921. My grandmother's father, Placido Quimpo born in the Philippines (Capiz, Panay Island)
and he emigrated to South Africa in 1874 to work in the fishing village with other Filipino families on the False Bay
coast line (Kalk Bay). Placido's Wife Anna-Maria Hermenhildo was born in Kalk Bay. Her Mother (Aurora Vissant/Vissens)
was of French decent and her father (Pedro Hermenhildo) was born in the Philippines (He was one of the original
Filipino seamen who settled in Kalk Bay in the 1850's, early 1860's)
This is a work in progress, so please contact me if you
have any information that might help complete the story of how the VALCARCEL come to be in Cape Town and the Links with the
Philippines and/or Spain.
