The story as told by my Grandmother, Louisa Valcarcel (Nee Quimpo) was that her father Placido was part of a circus troupe from the Philippines on their way to New York via the Cape during 1874. A catholic priest, Father Duignan convinced Placido and a number of other Filipinos to stop off in Cape Town. Placido went to Kalk Bay and worked as a fisherman eventually owning up to 7 boats and owned property in Kalk Bay (bought in 1902 for £100) near the station and 5 plots of land (bought in 1905 for £200) near De Waal Rd in Diep River.(Records from his last will recorded at the National Archives in cape Town confirm this information). Married Anna-Maria Hermenhildo They had 17 children. Assisted Father Duignan in the building of the St James RC Church
